The city boasts an UNESCO World Heritage Site that involves three sites. The first and a must-see if you only have time for one, is the Cathedral of Notre Dame of Reims. Construction on the Gothic masterpiece began in 1211 and finished in 1275. It’s older and larger than the more famous Notre Dame in Paris. It’s home to 2,300+ statues, including the iconic Smiling Angel. Damage to the statue during the war made the angel a symbol of German brutality.
This is the second part of the UNESCO site in Reims. The former archbishop residence was initially built in the 4th century. Hundreds of years later, it is now a museum for invaluable treasures that were housed in the Cathedral.
The third and last part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site is this out of the way abbey. The abbey itself is in ruins but its accompanying church is still very much standing. It even predates the magnificent cathedral in Reims.
.This is a must-see for World War II buffs. See where Germany first signed the unconditional surrender to the Allies.
